- Continue dental care while you’re expecting your baby.
- Your child’s dental care starts at birth: clean your baby’s gums with a soft, wet cloth or gauze after nursing and before bedtime.
- Start a nighttime brushing ritual with the very first tooth.
- Schedule your first pediatric dental visit when the first tooth appears or by 1 year of age, whichever comes first.
- Never put the baby down for a nap or the night with a bottle containing anything other than water.
- Eliminate sippy cups and pacifiers by the age of 2.
- Avoid fruit juices. Offer water to drink and whole fruit to eat.
- Avoid sugary drinks including soda, sports drinks and energy drinks
- Schedule a dental visit for your child every six months.
- Teach your child to floss by age 6.
